Baikoen Bonsai Kenkyukai 61st Annual Winter Silhouettes Show

January 17-18th, 2026

Location: Los Angeles Arboretum - Ayres Hall

Time: 10:00am to 4:30pm
Baikoen Bonsai Kenkyukai will be conducting our 61st Annual Winter Silhouettes Show the week after Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend at the Los Angeles Arboretum. Our exhibit will have trees in their leafless form, showing off their trunk and branch structures. Our show will offer the following: Exhibit, sales area, Saturday night reception featuring entertainment, giant raffle and auction.

We are pleased to welcome Milan Karpisek, bonsai artist from Germany, as our CBS Guest Artist for this quarter. Milan brings a wealth of experience, refined technique, and a deep appreciation for traditional European and Japanese bonsai aesthetics. We are honored to have him join our club and look forward to learning from his artistry, insight, and passion for bonsai.​

Club Meeting - Josh Miller - Grafting

 

March 19, 2026

Location: Los Angeles Arboretum (Bamboo Room)

We are pleased to welcome Josh Miller, a bonsai practitioner with years of hands-on experience and deep involvement in the California bonsai community. Josh has studied and worked alongside a variety of respected artists and clubs, developing a strong practical understanding of bonsai techniques. In this demonstration, he will be sharing his knowledge of grafting, focusing on its use to improve structure, branch placement, and long-term refinement. We look forward to an informative and engaging presentation.

Club Meeting -  Ryan Pitts - Juniper Demo

We are pleased to welcome back Ryan Pitts as a returning demonstrator. Ryan brings a thoughtful approach to bonsai design and refinement, along with practical experience developed through years of study and hands-on work. His return demonstration offers an opportunity to continue learning from his evolving techniques and artistic perspective, and we’re excited to have him back with the club.

Club Meeting - Ernie Hasan

We are pleased to welcome Ernie Hassan, a long-time bonsai practitioner with deep roots in the California bonsai community. Ernie brings decades of experience, a strong foundation in traditional techniques, and a practical, hands-on approach to bonsai development. For this evening’s demonstration, he will most likely be working with juniper, sharing insights into styling, refinement, and long-term care. We look forward to an informative and engaging demonstration.​​

Ted is the current Japanese Curator of the GSBF South Collection at the Huntington Library. Ted is based out of Pasadena and brings a huge reservoir of information.

Mike Lane comes to us from Fort Myers, Florida. He has is a rising star in the bonsai community. In a rather short time frame he is already an international bonsai star and has traveled as a guest artist to India! If you are in the area, this is a meeting not to miss if you have tropical species in your collection.

Its going to be a hot Christmas in July this year! Pool party or we call it a mid year celebration when most of our trees are going through a summer dormancy its a time for the caretakers to take a break and have some fun!  Once again its going to be the Lau's Residence.  Please sign up soon when the list comes out. The club will provide the main dish while the club members will provide all the sides and desserts! Have enough to serve 15-20 people. Also if you like to participate in the annual White Elephant Exchange don't forget to bring a gift.

Caz brings a thoughtful and personal approach to bonsai practice, shaped by her experiences abroad and a strong appreciation for natural form, balance, and long-term development. For this evening’s demonstration, she will be working with juniper, sharing her insight into design, technique, and the artistic decision-making behind the process. We’re excited to have her back and look forward to an engaging demonstration.
